How Efficient Filtration Solutions
Contribute to Clean Energy Production

Green hydrogen could be the most exciting opportunity in clean energy generation. However, the sector is struggling with high production costs, which are limiting uptake compared to other zero- or low-carbon alternatives. Efficient filtration, deoxidization and drying technologies can support productivity levels, which in turn could help make green hydrogen a more viable and competitive option.  

Green hydrogen has an important role to play in tackling the climate crisis, thanks to a production process that harnesses renewable energy sources, biogas reforming, and waste stream fermentation. However, the production of green hydrogen also requires extremely high purity levels to avoid process repetition, which means that reliable and efficient filtration solutions incorporating advanced technologies are the key to developing viable, large-scale facilities to take the power source further into the mainstream.

One of the most important steps in producing green hydrogen is removing the oxygen from the input gas to isolate the hydrogen. Deoxidisers (De-Oxo) are the specialised components designed for this purpose, supporting hydrogen purity and helping mitigate the potential of explosion risks. 

Combined, the Donaldson purification modules can provide hydrogen with an O2 max of 2 ppm(v) and H2O max of 1 ppm(v).

Consequently, it is crucial to ensure this aspect of production harnesses the best available technology. 

In addition to using a high-quality deoxidiser, hydrogen producers should also pay close attention to the heat-regenerated adsorption dryers used in the purification process. These units can filter and dry highly humid gas while helping prevent the unwanted consumption of hydrogen or purge gases during the process, minimizing waste. For hydrogen producers, this could translate to low operating costs as well as simplified maintenance.

The inherent risks in the production of green hydrogen emphasise the need to collaborate with experienced and knowledgeable partners to help mitigate risk. All components, from the smallest filter to the most advanced adsorption dryer, should be thoroughly tried and tested to support compliance with standards and optimum performance.

The key to building efficiency and scale in green hydrogen production will be solutions that offer repeatable design, installation, maintenance, and usage. At the same time, adaptability and innovation will be important as the green hydrogen sector grows. Despite the current challenges of high production costs in creating green hydrogen, the adoption of advanced technologies in efficient filtration, deoxidization, and drying is pointing the way towards future long-term viability.
